Lattice Smocking & Tate Modern

Today I practiced a new technique, lattice smocking onto fabric. The technique does require more time to create the effect and texture of the crossing and gathering of the material.

On the wrong side of the fabric I mapped out the grid shown below. This allowed guidance for when it came to sewing. It prevents confusion later on. White fabric was likely the best option since I may consider dying the material as well as the fact that the pencil marks were at least visible. I still do not own a water soluble pen, I must keep reminding myself to buy one.

Double stitching the diagonal lines together created amazing volume and a soft form. The gathering of the material also affected the shape of the edges, almost producing a ruffle design.

I wouldn't say this is the final outcome yet as I find it is still incomplete as I intend to continue further down for the design to be expressed even more. There is enough fabric and thread to do so, so why not! However, it's looking lovely so far. Personally, I love how smocking is so visual but also tempting to touch and feel the altered surface of the fabric. I may also consider adding embellishments as a finishing touch.

On Wednesday, I was able to visually and contextually research modern art ranging from prints to weaves and even human hair. All of which related to my own specialism as well as the project theme.

I'm currently documenting my visit in my sketchbook which I will explain more about the association between the project theme and the selected pieces that I fell in loved with.

Here are just a few photos I shot on the day.

This was by far the best and most inspiring room towards ideas for the form and space project.

Sheela Gowda - Behold (2009) Ropes made from braided human hair, all of which knotted to create the appearance of what I call, chunky wool.

The pieces were enormous and were dispersed across this large room, all of which contrasted with the white walls so the structures were intensely eye-popping.
